Theatre Rhino’s 2013-14 Season

Four Premieres and a Special Event!

It’s our thirty-sixth anniversary season as the longest-running queer theatre anywhere!

We began our 36th Anniversary Season with a premiere family drama by John Fisher, To Sleep and Dream, and then we presented the San Francisco premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s only gay musical, Road Show.

The season continued with another SF Premiere, The Habit of Art, Alan Bennett’s witty bioplay of gay Brits W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten and his humorous glimpse backstage at the Royal National Theatre.

We then had our annual Benefit with all your LGBT favorites, and the season wrapped up with a fun and funny journey into the lives of young African-American lesbians: Laurinda D. Brown’s Walk Like a Man (based on her Lambda Award winning book.)

The Critics on ROAD SHOW

“A must see! Rating: 5 out of 5 stars!”
 Kedar Adour – Theatreworld

“Run quickly to this Sondheim Gem. I sure as hell will. Again! … The score is not just good. It is damn good.”
Lee Hartgrave –Beyondchron.com

“Sondheim's almost maniacal wordplay takes center stage… Genuine emotional warmth… Your chance to see Road Show on a stage may not soon come along again.”
Richard Dodds – Bay Area Reporter

“Sondheim’s song-and-dance ditties run along at a hot hoofer’s pace… Wonderful performances. Rudy Guerrero is exceptional, Michael Doppe quite fetching, and Ae’Jay Mitchell is a real find.”
Jason Victor SerinusSF Examiner

“A polished, well-staged, superbly sung and acted revival from San Francisco’s Theatre Rhinoceros.” Pierce CarsonNapa Valley Register

“A stunning production of Road Show! Director John Fisher brings an unbroken flexibility to the production.”
Richard ConnemaTalkinbroadway.com

“It's easy to revel in Sondheim's deliciously but unobtrusively complex and tuneful score and devilishly cutting lyrics and in Weidman's cleverly constructed book… A show that not only deserves to be more widely seen but also has some local connections… But it's the show's intrinsic merits that make Rhino Artistic Director John Fisher's production such a gift… Sondheim aficionados take heed. Unless you got to see one of this long-troubled play's few prior outings elsewhere, this is your first opportunity to see how nicely the book and score can nestle together onstage.”
Rob Hurwitt – SF Chronicle

“An extremely talented ensemble cast... Particularly touching is the romance between two men and the love song, “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened,” which could easily be sung outside the confines of the theatre. John Fisher brilliantly directs. Musical direction by Dave Dobrusky. And, hey, it’s Sondheim for gawd’s sake!”
Sister Dana – SF Bay Times

“What is really outstanding are the deliciously dazzling lyrics Sondheim uses to tell the story.  Some are cynical, playful, and brilliantly satirical, others are simply heartbreaking… [This] fully satisfying Sondheim work is worth seeing for the performances of its two leads and its engaging score.”
Bonnie Weiss – Musical Theatre Lovers United

The Habit of Art

A Very British Comedy by Alan Bennett (The History Boys)
March 27 – April 13, 2014
Wed. - Sat. @ 800 PM; Sundays at 300 pm
Z Below Theatre (470 Florida St. between 17th and 18th Streets, San Francisco) Map It

Alan Bennett’s new play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

The Reviews Are In!

The Critics Applaud..

"Theatre Rhino scores an "A" with this production, both for giving local audiences the opportunity to experience it, and by delivering it with such style.... Happily, Theatre Rhinoceros is providing local audiences the opportunity to see this challenging, insightful, and entertaining play in one of Rhino's classiest productions.... Director John Fisher has expertly staged this play of interwoven scenarios and complex staging."
Richard Dodds – Bay Area Reporter (BAR)

"The polished Bay Area premiere of “Habit of Art” at Theatre Rhinoceros offers an intriguing glimpse of how a play is formed — and much more…. John Fisher directs with careful attention to both of the plays’ comic and poignant nuances, and he and his actors are adept at differentiating, and inhabiting, their two roles."
Jean Schiffman – SF Examiner

"AN EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCTION OF ALAN BENNETT’S THE HABIT OF ART.... A comic tour de force by Donald Currie playing Auden....
Donald Currie is outstanding as the unconventional Auden.  He makes you care about the character’s frailty and dried up talent while also playing an actor who can’t remember his lines and hates the way Auden is presented... John Fisher is superb, too as the pained, prissily fastidious Britten. He offers a prevailing echo of the tormented Britten. Tamar Cohn as the stage manager and Craig Souza as Carpenter are magnetic in their roles. Michael DeMartini is delightful as the frustrated playwright. Justin Lucas gives an exceptional performance as  Stuart, confused the rent boy. He gives a sterling speech at the end of the play when he complains “I want to get in. I want to join. I want to know” after hearing all of the intellectual repartee between the leading characters.... John Fisher's direction is sharp"
Richard Connema – For All Events

"Bennett’s dialog between Auden and Britten are handled brilliantly by Currie and Fisher... Alan Bennett’s latest play - is a paean to theatre as well as to W.H. Auden and Benjamin Britten."
Kedar Adour – Theatre World / For All Events

"Without doubt, the evening belongs to Donald Currie, who gives a glowing performance as Fitz/Auden."
George Heymont –

Alan Bennett has been one of the leading English-language dramatists since the success of Beyond the Fringe in the 1960s. His television series Talking Heads has become a modern-day classic, as have many of his works for the stage, including Forty Years On, The Lady In The Van, A Question of Attribution, The Madness of George III(together with the Oscar-nominated screenplay The Madness of King George), and an adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. At the National Theatre, The History Boys won Evening Standard, Critics' Circle, and Olivier awards, and the South Bank Award. On Broadway it won five New York Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics' Circle Awards, a New York Drama Critics' Award for Best Play, a New York Drama League Award, and six Tonys including Best Play. The film of The History Boys was released in 2006. Mr. Bennett's latest play, The Habit of Art, toured successfully after its run at The National Theatre. The History Boys has recently completed its second tour out of Bath (Bath Theatre Royal Productions) and The Madness of George III opens at Bath this summer. Mr. Bennett has recently been awarded the Prix Europeen de la SACD.

The Critics Rave for Walk Like a Man!

Walk Like a Man is a sexy, sassy, sensitive play about the lives and loves of black lesbians; it also is a powerful and moving human story about people seeking connection, identity and acceptance... Artfully directed by John Fisher. …An ensemble of five extremely talented actors playing multiple roles brings Brown’s complicated, real-world characters to life via monologues, dialogue and spoken-word sequences. They don’t mince words or hold back.”
-- Leslie Katz, SF Examiner (Read the Review)

"Sexy and brazen, raunchy and wrenching, this series of vignettes, spread out over two acts, comes with nary a dull moment and plenty of climaxes!"
-- Robert Avila, SF Bay Guardian (Read the Review)

"Director John Fisher skillfully finds the right tones for the pieces, and the five very accomplished performers confidently move among the 20 diverse characters. Plays about gay men are in plentiful supply, but when a rare lesbian counterpart finds its way to our stages, the characters have often been grim and tortured. While Walk Like a Man has its share of serious moments, the playful mood is mostly in celebration of love and lust unleashed."
--Richard Dodds, Bay Area Reporter (Read the Review)

The Habit of Art (return engagement)

Return Engagement!

The Habit of Art

A Very British Comedy by Alan Bennett (The History Boys)
July 31 - August 23rd
Wednesdays - Saturdays @ 800 PM; Saturday matinees at 300 pm
Eureka Theatre, (215 Jackson St at Front/Battery, SF, CA 94111) Map It

Theatre Rhino remounts its hit spring production of The Habit of Art.

The Latest Great Review - from SF Bay Guardian 08/21/14:

"Too much fun! In the back and forth between the 'play' being staged and the actors and crew rehearsing it, we get Bennett's subtle, witty, unflinchingly raunchy measure of a life lived in artistic creation. Act one, which sets up the turmoil that act two engages belongs to Auden as well as the addled actor playing him, who can't quite remember his lines (both embodied with a lively and beautifully measured insouciance by Currie)."
Robert Avila, SF Bay Guardian

New Reviews -- August, 2014!

"Hilarious and insightful! It’s a tremendously satisfying and compelling theatrical experience!"
Barry Willis – Best of SF Bay Area

"Donald Currie as Auden and John Fisher as Britten are especially passionate and convincing in their double-layered roles… Alan Bennett's sensitive homage to the lives of poet W.H. Auden and composer Benjamin Britten offers deep insight into the dubious habits and great artistry that defined their lives and legacies."
Roger Bingham – Edgeonthenet.com

"Theatre Rhino presented this Bay area premiere last Spring, so the current production is a return engagement. We’re lucky to have it. Utilizing a play within a play format, The Habit of Art is constructed like nesting dolls—masks within masks within masks —and the result is fascinating. The script is an intellectual smorgasbord of the highest order. It is also superbly entertaining, thanks to careful, intelligent direction by John Fisher (who also plays the actor Henry who plays the character Benjamin Britten) and fine work by the entire cast. Donald Currie is fascinating to watch. As Henry (actor)/Benjamin Britten (character), John Fisher performs as well as he directs. Henry has his own secrets, implied but never revealed, as does Britten. All of this is managed with maximum clarity, so that the viewer is challenged and engaged but needn’t be frustrated or confused. The remainder of the cast, playing the playwright of the play-within-the-play, the stage managers, and actors playing a young singer being tutored by Britten, a rent-boy visiting Auden and biographer Humphrey Carpenter are all equally good and each player has moments to shine. This fascinating and subtle intellectual jaunt will be deeply satisfying for demanding audiences, who go to the theatre to think as well as to be entertained."
