A Tribute to Jeffrey Hartgraves

Jeffrey Hartgraves
1961-2008
Jeffrey Hartgraves, a core artist of Theatre Rhinoceros, passed September 25th.
Jeffrey came to the Rhino in 2002 as a writer, director, actor and designer and contributed greatly to the success of the theatre over the past half decade.
Jeffrey's play Shark Bites, about his on-going battle with cancer, was a runaway hit this past winter and his show Veronica Klaus' Family Jewels enjoyed three knock out runs at The Rhino.
Jeffrey also directed the World Premiere of Jaeson Post's Worse than Chocolate and the American Premiere of Alan Bennett's A Question of Attribution.
As an actor he starred, hysterically and dramatically as needed, in Amnesia, Worse than Chocolate, Awe about Eve, An Englishman Abroad, The Man Who Came to Dinner and Medea: The Musical.
A benefit performance was given in Jeffrey’s honor this past spring, which boasted the talents of Jeffrey's friends and compatriots in the theatre. The benefit was appropriately titled The Butterfly Effect, a perfect reflection of the way Jeffrey affected so much around him.
Jeffrey also was a regular contributor to Theatre Rhinoceros fundraisers, appearing most recently at Levende Lounge on Tuesday night, September 23rd.
Outside of The Rhino Jeffrey saw his work produced locally at O'Neill's Tao House, Exit Stage Left and at theatres across the country as well as seeing his poetry, plays and prose published.
Jeffrey will be sorely missed by The Rhino family. He was a jocular and much loved presence at openings, parties and celebrations and a fiercely intelligent participant in the creation of theatre.
The staff, board and artists of Theatre Rhinoceros join me in grieving this profound loss to our lives, our theatre and to the community of theatre in general.

A gamut of queer representation on stage, but what truly unites all eight of the selected works is that they tell the story of being different, and depict the journey of forging new rules to live by.
100 Years of Queer Theatre presents eight plays in chronological sequence in rotating repertory. The festival features an ensemble of actors: Gene Mocsy, John Hutchinson, Carolyn Doyle, Amanda Krampf, Diana Gutierrez, Wylie Herman, 'Drew Todd, Aaron Martinsen, Dale Albright, Craig Souza, P.A. Cooley, Michael Vega, Aaron Tworek, Natalia Toscano, Maria Carolina Morales, Jessie Aquirre, Lula Chapman.
In looking over the past 100 years, there has never been a shortage of gay and lesbian playwrights; what has changed radically is both the type of work mainstream society is ready to embrace, and the willingness of playwrights to write openly with queer themes and characters integrated into the story, and to create work that reflects on gay life within the context of society as a whole.

*This production is dedicated to the memory of Robert Coffman, a much loved Theatre Rhino actor and donor. Robert performed a reading of “A Christmas Memory” at The Rhino each holiday season for many years.

The return of everyone’s favorite musical about lesbians, gay men, an ex-wife, their child and a straight psychiatrist!
When Marvin leaves Trina for Whizzer, everyone’s life goes into a tailspin. But no one is more confused about it all than Trina and Marvin’s son Jason. To the rescue comes Trina’s psychiatrist Mendel and of course the friendly “lesbians from next door,” Dr. Charlotte and Cordelia.
Since the premier of its first act “March of the Falsettos” in 1981 through its triumphant debut on Broadway in 1992 to today, Falsettos has been making audiences laugh and cry for almost three decades.
The Rhino’s production of Falsettos is helmed by the incomparable Hector Correa, directing his first Rhino production since 2001’s Sirena, Queen of the Tango.

A Workshop in Performance production on the Mainstage of a new play by John Fisher.
Jack and Dave have lived together for twenty years as domestic partners. Jack’s father dies abruptly without ever having told Jack he was ill. Jack’s mother Doreen is suddenly homeless as a result of poor financial planning on the part of her and her husband.
Jack and Dave take her in and, in spite of tensions, there seems to be the possibility of happy coexistence. But secrets about the past and present are soon revealed and the tensions quickly become unendurable.
This play will be presented again at a later date at The Rhino in a production open to the press.

Stories by three of the most important writers of the twentieth century. The evening showcases Two On a Party by Tennessee Williams, Miss Furr and Miss Skeene by Gertrude Stein, and Suddenly Home by the Bay Area's very own Armistead Maupin.

Three on a Party charts both a history of literature in the twentieth century and the slow coming out of this thing called “same-sex marriage.”
From Stein’s tale of two women in 1910, to Williams’ richly written fantasy of unbridled sex in the straight laced fifties, to the hilarious shenanigans of Maupin’s very San Francisco extended family in the late 1980s, Three on a Party takes a literary journey across time and genre as it amuses, titillates and lays bare the passions of men and women.
